Next Steps: Markraft Adds Resale Value

After 23 years in the house where they raised their four children, Wilmington couple John and Cindy Antonelli received news that John’s employer, Corning, would relocate them to Charlotte. Before putting the house on the market, they decided to remodel.

“I updated it so it would sell,” said Cindy Antonelli.

And it worked. They listed the house and three days later, they had three offers. Their home located on Camway Drive near the University of North Carolina Wilmington is currently under contract and will close in June.

When it came to renovating the kitchen and updating the bathrooms, she turned to Markraft Cabinets.

“I just didn’t want the house to look like it was from 1980. It had dark wood, dark cabinets, dated hardware,” she said. The house was built in 1981 and hadn’t been renovated.

Markraft updated the kitchen with white painted flat panel Aspen Maple cabinet doors by Westridge Cabinetry. It added new Amerock drawer pulls and door knobs with a brushed nickel finish. And Markraft also installed white granite countertops. The new look which Cindy can only describe as “bright” cost under $10,000. Markraft also replaced three bathroom vanities.

The renovation process was easier than she expected.

“I had to wash dishes in the wet bar sink for a couple weeks, but the outcome of the kitchen is so much nicer than I anticipated,” said Cindy, who is the director of the St. Mark Montessori Preschool.

Markraft Cabinets designer, Suzanne Reid, has a son who attends the preschool.

“I thought if she’s supporting my business, I should support hers,” Antonelli said.

The entire remodel process took about two months.

“The only hard part was not being able to use the kitchen for that time. We ate a lot of pizza for dinner. My only advice would be not to start a remodel project in October or November. You really want to have your kitchen available during the holidays,” she said.
