Utilizing today’s trends to create a custom kitchen design

In a world of HGTV and Pinterest, today’s design trends are constantly at our fingertips. Whether you want to keep it simple and clean with white shaker cabinets or prefer to shake it up with a cool gray textured slab, you can find images and inspiration in a millisecond. With all these resources, you can truly create a unique kitchen.

White shaker cabinets are a well sought-after product – and it’s easy to see why with their clean lines and ability to brighten any space. With so much hype over transitional design, you might wonder how implementing a “trendy” style can have a unique outcome. Including other design elements help add a touch of personality. In the example shown above, floating shelves and darker inset cabinet pulls are used. The mix of white cabinets with the natural wood open shelving and butcher block countertop create visual interest and aesthetic appeal. The grain pattern of the wood complements the smoothness of the painted cabinets.

Choosing a backsplash tile can be an overwhelming process, but it doesn’t have to be! Subway tiles are an easy way to add texture while keeping it simple. There’s no need to stop at the bottom of the cabinets or windowsills either – just bring them all the way to the ceiling. This not only helps uniquify your kitchen; it’s also one less paint color you have to choose.

Visual aspects are vital, however, we can’t forget about the importance of a functional kitchen as well. Large islands with implemented seating can easily replace having a separate breakfast nook and in turn reveal more space for cabinets and appliances. Sometimes, with large enough islands, an entire eating area can be included in the island layout. This is especially useful if an open living concept is desired. Furthermore, a base microwave cabinet is a good option to open more usable countertop space without losing a whole lot of storage. Stacked wall cabinets are also a good way to minimize cluttered cabinets and countertops. They are ideal for storing items you don’t use that much, like holiday decorations or dishes for special occasions. And, in the name of convenience in this fast-paced world, stacking cabinets to the ceiling also eliminates the need to dust the tops of your cabinets.
