Move over grey – there’s a new tone in town.

While, admittedly, smoky gunmetal hues aren’t exactly going the way of avocado green in kitchens, Markraft designer Amanda Fisher is forecasting warmer colors for 2019. “I think you’re going to see more people moving away from grey to beiges, clays, and taupes,” Amanda noted. That doesn’t mean bold isn’t back, though.

The new year will also see a return to darker kitchen colors, navy is one of the most sought-after of them. Perhaps even more popular is black. Why? Consider that little black dress you’ve kept through the seasons and, possibly, even decades – it’s sophisticated, flattering and exudes elegance all on its own.

But to keep dark kitchens from being dreary or drab, Amanda said incorporating black or navy with those warm, natural tones will soften things up.

Consider adding in basic – but never boring – white, which will remain a top choice in kitchen remodeling projects in 2019.
The reason: it creates a contemporary look that never goes out of style… and it goes with practically everything.

To further enhance that sleek look, Amanda said opt for cabinets that don’t have handles or pulls but instead have a push button system. Cleaner lines also means easier to clean, which is always a plus.

If you do choose hardware for your cabinets, a brushed or matte gold could be the way to go.

“That trend really picked up this year, and I think it will still be trending in 2019,” she said. “I really love how that bright white pops against the metal.”

When it comes right down to it, the interplay of contrast and compliment created by a mixture of colors and materials is the overarching theme for kitchen design in the coming year.

Since rustic woods are rising in popularity, Amanda said it’s a great material to mix in with, say, that crisp white. And weaving together different aesthetics is not just okay, she added, it’s also on point with the latest design trends. Consider pairing industrial with coastal to create a modern farmhouse look.

“I like to mix different styles,” Amanda said. “That’s something I do a lot now in kitchens that I design.”
